Major BNW Characters

Mustapha Mond: Main controller of Western Europe and one of the ten World Controllers. He tells students of the old ways of life like monogamy and mother-child bonding, which are no longer considered appropriate in the "new world."

Bernard Marx: Alpha Plus. He feels that he does not fit in with society and does not believe in being promiscuous. He feels inferior because he is physically smaller than his fellow Alpha Pluses. He speaks out against the government and as a result he is eventually banned to an island so he can no longer pose a threat to society.

Lenina Crowne: Alpha. She is the main female character in the book and is a typical "civilized" person in the "new world." Begins to like Bernard Marx and persuades him to take her to the Reservation, where she meets and eventually falls in love with John

Hemoltz Watson: He is friends with Bernard and later becomes friends with John (the Savage). He is handsome and strong, but these qualities alienate him from his peers.

Linda: Beta.  As a young woman she is left on the Reservation and has a son, John who is a half-breed. When she is returned to civilization with Lenina, Bernard, and John, she is put on a permanent soma holiday and students are taken to observe her as an example of old age and ugliness.

John (the Savage): He is the son of Linda, and is brought to civilization, which he despises. He is willing to give up happiness in exchange for freedom and isolation, which he does. He goes and isolates himself in an old lighthouse. Eventually he loses hope and hangs himself and is discovered by Reporters, and this is where the book ends.
